Understanding Canada’s Lifesaving Society Swim Program
The Lifesaving Society is Canada’s trusted leader in drowning prevention, water safety education, and aquatic training. For more than a century, the organization has helped Canadians develop essential swimming skills, water safety knowledge, and lifesaving abilities.
The Lifesaving Society swim program follows a progressive approach that helps swimmers build confidence and skills step-by-step. Children begin with foundational water comfort and swimming skills before progressing through Preschool levels, Swimmer levels, and eventually Canadian Swim Patrol.
Whether your child is just starting lessons or preparing for advanced swimming and lifesaving skills, understanding the correct level is an important part of their swimming journey.
At Swim Brothers, we help families understand where their child fits within the Lifesaving Society swimming progression — from early water exploration in Preschool levels, through Swimmer levels, and into advanced Canadian Swim Patrol programs.

Understanding Lifesaving Society Swim Levels
Every child learns to swim at their own pace. The correct swim level is based on a swimmer’s current abilities, confidence, and experience in the water — not just their age.
The Lifesaving Society progression is designed to help swimmers build skills step-by-step. Each level introduces new challenges while strengthening previous skills, helping children become safer and more confident swimmers.
The swimming progression includes:
- Preschool Swim Levels (1–5)
- Swimmer Levels (1–6)
- Canadian Swim Patrol (Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol)

🌊 Progress at Your Own Pace
Swimmers advance by successfully completing each level before moving on to the next. Every child develops at a different pace, and our Swim Brothers instructors ensure each swimmer has the confidence and skills needed before advancing.
Lifesaving Society Preschool Swim Levels (1–5)
Preschool levels are designed for young swimmers who are developing comfort and confidence in the water.
Through fun activities and guided instruction, children learn important foundations including:
- Water adjustment and comfort
- Floating and gliding
- Kicking skills
- Movement through the water
- Water safety awareness
- Independence in aquatic environments
Preschool levels help children develop the skills and confidence needed to continue into the Swimmer program.
Lifesaving Society Swimmer Levels (1–6)
Swimmer levels help children become more independent and capable in the water while developing stronger swimming techniques and endurance.
As swimmers progress through the levels, they work on:
- Front crawl
- Back crawl
- Whip kick and breaststroke skills
- Swimming endurance
- Deep water confidence
- Entries and safety skills
- Continuous swimming ability
The Swimmer program prepares children for lifelong swimming skills and provides the foundation needed for advanced aquatic programs.
Canadian Swim Patrol
Canadian Swim Patrol is the next stage for swimmers who want to develop advanced swimming ability, fitness, and lifesaving awareness.
The program builds on skills learned in the Swimmer levels and introduces swimmers to more challenging aquatic skills.
Canadian Swim Patrol includes three levels:
Rookie Patrol
Rookie Patrol introduces swimmers to lifesaving skills while continuing to develop swimming strength and endurance.
Swimmers begin building:
- Rescue awareness
- Emergency response skills
- Stronger swimming ability
Ranger Patrol
Ranger Patrol continues developing swimmer endurance, lifesaving knowledge, and rescue skills.
Swimmers work toward:
- Improved swimming stamina
- Stronger rescue abilities
- Increased confidence in challenging situations
Star Patrol
Star Patrol is the advanced level of Canadian Swim Patrol and challenges swimmers to demonstrate strong swimming skills, fitness, and lifesaving abilities.
Swimmers continue preparing for future aquatic and lifesaving leadership.

The assessment takes only a few minutes and provides:
✓ Your child’s current swim level
✓ The recommended level for their next swim class
Why Choosing the Right Swim Level Matters
Starting in the appropriate swim level helps children feel successful, confident, and motivated.
When lessons match a child’s ability:
- Children build confidence faster
- Skills develop more naturally
- Swimmers experience more success
- Safety awareness improves
- Progress becomes more enjoyable
A child’s swim level is about skill development, not simply age. Two children of the same age may be ready for completely different levels depending on their experience and comfort in the water.

Frequently Asked Questions About Lifesaving Society Swim Levels
The best swim level depends on your child’s current swimming skills, confidence, and experience in the water. Our swim level calculator provides a recommended starting point, but final placement must be confirmed with an in-water assessment by a certified swim instructor.
Some swimmers may progress faster and be ready for a higher level if they already demonstrate the required skills and confidence.
Age can help determine which program is appropriate, but swimming ability and comfort in the water are the most important factors when choosing a level.
Progress depends on many factors, including lesson frequency, practice opportunities, confidence, and skill development. With regular sessions spaced daily or weekly, we find most children advance to the next swim level in 10 sessions.
After completing the Swimmer levels, many swimmers continue into Canadian Swim Patrol, which includes Rookie Patrol, Ranger Patrol, and Star Patrol.
