🛡️ Water Safety Is the Foundation of Every Lesson
At Swim Brothers, swimming lessons are about more than learning strokes—they’re about developing the knowledge, confidence, and skills needed to be safer in and around the water.
According to the Lifesaving Society, approximately 4 in 10 drowning deaths in Canada occur in Ontario. Most fatal drownings happen in lakes, rivers, and ponds. Most fatal drowning takes place during the warmer months of May through September. According to the RCMP, children aged nine or younger make up nearly 80% of drowning-related visits to hospital emergency departments.
Because safety is our highest priority, all Swim Brothers instructors hold multiple nationally recognized certifications, including:
- Swim Instructor
- National Lifeguard
- Lifesaving Instructor
- Emergency First Aid Instructor
- Standard First Aid with CPR-C
These qualifications ensure every lesson is taught with a strong emphasis on safe practices, risk awareness, and age-appropriate instruction.
Throughout every lesson, swimmers develop important water safety skills, including:
- Safe entry and exit techniques
- Floating and recovering to a safe position
- Breath control and body positioning
- Treading water
- Confidence in both shallow and deep water
- Pool awareness and safe decision-making
- Basic survival swimming skills appropriate to the swimmer’s age and ability
Water safety is integrated into every lesson—not taught as a separate topic. By combining skill development with practical safety education, we help swimmers build confidence while learning habits that can contribute to safer experiences in and around the water.

🔍 Frequently Asked Questions—Private, At-Home Swim Lessons in York Region
Getting Started
Private at-home swim lessons are one-on-one swimming lessons that take place in your own home or condo pool. Instead of travelling to a public pool, a certified Swim Brothers instructor comes directly to you. Every lesson is personalized to the swimmer’s age, ability, confidence level, and goals, allowing them to learn in a comfortable and familiar environment.
Private swim lessons provide dedicated one-on-one instruction tailored to each swimmer’s individual needs. With the instructor’s full attention focused on one swimmer, lessons include continuous feedback, more opportunities to practice, and individualized coaching that isn’t possible in a group setting. Many families find that swimmers make faster progress than they would in traditional group classes because every lesson is customized to the swimmer’s learning pace and confidence level.
Private individual lessons and group lessons both have benefits, but private lessons offer individualized instruction, flexible scheduling, and the ability to learn at your own pace. Because every lesson is tailored to the swimmer, many families choose private lessons to build confidence, improve technique, or help beginners develop strong swimming and water safety skills.
Private swim lessons are ideal for preschoolers, children, teenagers, adults, beginners, nervous swimmers, individuals looking to improve their technique, and swimmers who benefit from personalized instruction or adaptive teaching methods.
Many children can begin learning basic water confidence and water safety skills during the preschool years. Lessons are always adapted to each child’s developmental stage, confidence level, and readiness.
Yes. Toddlers can begin developing water comfort, confidence, and basic water safety skills through age-appropriate instruction. Lessons focus on creating positive experiences in the water while introducing foundational swimming skills. We find age 2 is a good age to begin independent lessons with a swim instructor.
It’s never too late to learn to swim. Children of all ages can develop swimming skills, improve confidence, and learn important water safety habits regardless of previous experience.
Absolutely. We provide private swim lessons for adults who are learning to swim for the first time, overcoming fear of the water, improving technique, or building confidence in the pool.

Swim Lessons & Progress
One hour is our minimum service time. That one hour may be used for one swimmer for the full hour, or divided into two 30-minute individual lessons for 2 swimmers back to back. We have many families with 3 children and they schedule 1.5 hour lessons so that each child receives an individual 30-minute lesson each. Other families come together with friends at one pool, and they schedule longer duration sessions and each child receives an individual lesson each back to back. We have discounted pricing for longer durations.
Most families schedule lessons once or twice per week. Others schedule daily lessons Monday to Friday for one or more weeks in a row. We are open to whatever frequency works best for your family. Consistent practice helps swimmers build confidence, reinforce skills, and make steady progress.
Every swimmer learns at a different pace. The number of lessons depends on age, previous experience, confidence in the water, attendance, and individual goals. We find swimmers show improvement within 5 sessions, and 9-10 sessions is the common timeframe in which swimmers advance from one swim level to the next.
The first lesson begins with an in-water assessment of the swimmer’s current ability, confidence level, and goals. From there, the instructor develops a personalized lesson plan designed to support steady progress while emphasizing water safety.
Our instructors are certified with the Lifesaving Society, and they follow the LIfesaving Society’s Preschool, Swimmer, and Canadian Swim Patrol programs. At the first lessons, an in-water assessment is performed to determine the swimmer’s current swim level and lesson plans are tailored for each swimmer. Depending of the swimmer’s level, lessons may include water confidence, floating, kicking, breath control, front crawl (freestyle), backstroke, treading water, deep-water confidence, stroke development, endurance, and age-appropriate water safety skills.
Yes, we offer a free swim level finder. This does not replace an in-water assessment by a certified swim instructor, but it is a helpful tool to give you a sense of your child’s current swim level based on the levels outlined by the LIfesaving Society.
Yes. Private lessons are excellent for swimmers who already know the basics and want to improve stroke technique, breathing, efficiency, endurance, or overall swimming performance. Many of our families schedule private at-home swim lessons to help their child advance from one swim level to the next.
Parents’ Common Questions
Depending on the swimmers’ ages and skill levels, siblings may participate together or have individual back-to-back lessons. The majority of our families schedule individual lessons for their children. We’ll recommend the option that provides the best learning experience for everyone.
Yes, we ask parents to watch the swim lessons. Younger swimmers, especially, often feel more comfortable knowing a parent is nearby.
Swimmers should wear comfortable swimwear suitable for the pool. Goggles are recommended.
yes, swimmers should bring properly fitting goggles. Swim Brothers provides instructional equipment when needed during lessons.
This is very common. Lessons are taught patiently and at the swimmer’s own pace, allowing confidence to develop gradually through positive encouragement and individualized instruction. Learning in a familiar home or condo pool often helps swimmers feel more comfortable than in a busy public pool. Many of our families choose Swim Brothers because their child is nervous or shy in traditional swim class settings. With us, your child learns in the comfort of their own pool.
Yes. Water safety is incorporated into every lesson. Swimmers learn age-appropriate skills such as safe entries and exits, floating, treading water, breath control, pool awareness, and making safe decisions around water while developing their swimming ability. Our swim instructors hold multiple national certificates including National Lifeguard, Standard First Aid with CPR-C, and Emergency First Aid Instructor.
